Improve your Security Posture with Visual Firearm Detection
Every time a shooting occurs on the news or in our communities, we wonder if it could have been prevented. If only someone had caught the shooter earlier, so much loss could have been prevented…
Solutions like metal detectors can help, but determined individuals find ways to get around or bypass them. In settings like a college campus or shopping center, it’s simply not possible to line the entire perimeter with metal detectors.
But there is a solution that can help, using the security cameras you may already have: visual firearm detection. Visual firearm detection (VFD) systems use your existing security cameras and in many cases can detect firearms well beyond your building perimeter and before a potential shooter reaches your buildings.
What Is Visual Firearm Detection?
Visual firearm detection is AI-powered software that connects to your IP-based security cameras and analyzes your video feeds to identify brandished handguns and long guns.
If the AI-enhanced cameras detect a firearm, they will be visually verified by a human and within 10 seconds initiate your security plan – i.e. contact local police, alert your security team, lock down your building, and send out mass notifications are some of the options available. Before a shot has been fired, your team will be aware of the situation and can move quickly to prevent it from escalating.
Visual gun detection is already being widely adopted by schools, hospitals, corporate headquarters, stores, restaurants, entertainment venues, and transportation hubs across the country. Let’s look a little deeper at how the technology works and how you can have it installed, too.
How It Works
First, the AI software recognizes a person. Next, it will search for objects or body language that indicate the presence of a firearm. The system doesn’t only look for the shape of a gun; it also analyzes how the object is held, its orientation, and movement. It performs a multistep analysis across multiple video frames to reduce the risk of false alarms – all within a few seconds!
How Is Visual Firearm Detection Installed?
The core of a visual firearm detection (VFD) system is the AI-powered software, which is deployed on a small appliance in your server room. Installation involves connecting your existing surveillance cameras to the VFD appliance.
To implement your visual detection system, our team at AT&I Systems typically follow these steps:
- Site Assessment: We visit your location to evaluate your current surveillance infrastructure and identify areas that may require additional coverage.
- Design & Integration: We determine where new cameras may be needed and ensure all devices are compatible with the video management system. If upgrades are necessary, we’ll make recommendations. We also design integrations with various alarms and access control systems.
- Deploying a VFD system: VFD systems work with both on-premise and cloud based video management systems. We simply install the VFD appliance and connect your cameras.
- Configuration: We fine-tune the system for optimal performance by adjusting detection sensitivity, defining alert recipients, and setting up custom notifications.
- Training & Support: Our team provides hands-on training so local law enforcement and your staff understands how to interpret alerts and respond appropriately.
